Duif's Place:
Chess for Fans and Tournament Players

A Note From Duif:

Duif was one of the Top 100 Women Chessplayers in the United States according to the US Chess Federation’s 2005 list. Previously a scholastic coach, tournament player, and writer, Duif's Place includes information for chess fans and tournament players, as well as special chess info for kids. She was forced to retire in 2001 due to disability, but continues to stay in touch with the chess community when she can.

Duif at the
chessboard Hi! I'm very pleased--I was able to reactivate my rating and am back on the the list of Top 100 Women Chessplayers in the U.S.5 kept by US CHESS (The United States Chess Federation). Of course, I'm still just in the Top Amateur class, but chess remains one of the most satisfying activities in my life. --Duif

A note about the news: In 1996, we kept a "Hot Chess News" page with late-breaking news on important chess events. As our site has grown, though, we've found that our readers are more interested in feature stories. You can find great chess news at Mark Crowther's fantastic THIS WEEK IN CHESS site, and at other sites like chessbase.com. We've retitled our news page to be Chess News and Features, and we'll be concentrating on covering one or two important events in depth each month, things like the US Championship and the US Junior Championship that are of special interest to chess fans. We hope you'll find the change gives you more of the kind of stories you come to Duif's Place for!

How do you pronounce 'Duif'?

peace
dove

English speakers can use the English pronunciation, "Dove" (like the bird). In Dutch, "Duif," in English, "Dove," in Spanish, "Paloma."

A professional writer, Duif has previously written for CHESS LIFE and BITS & PIECES, and a number of nonchess magazines. She is also a member of the HTML Writers Guild.

What do you think about "women's chess"?

My thoughts on gender-restricted titles and prizes are a bit controversial. For full details, please see the page on Encouraging More Women to Play Chess.
