Correspondence Chess

Correspondence chess may be chess by mail or by e-mail. Time to study each move may go up to several days, and tournaments can take a year or more to complete. In most events, players may consult books, but not computers. Correspondence chess provides an opportunity for deep study and intense thought applied to every move. Teachers listed below have indicated a specialty in this area.

Team Coaching

Team coaching requires a special set of skills. Sometimes the best coaches aren't the highest-rated players, but rather coaches who can work well on issues like motivation, morale, and team effort. At the highest levels, a great coach may be one who can encourage a national champion to play board 2 with an eye to the overall team score. In scholastic events, a team coach has to deal with everything from lost lunch money to the child who has to leave early to make basketball practice. Teachers listed below have indicated a specialty in this area. Contact them for terms and conditions.

Preparation for Titled Players

Titled players (Masters and beyond) face additional challenges in their preparation. They are more likely to be playing individual matches rather than larger group tournaments, and have to keep an eye on international regulations. Below Grandmaster, they also need a strategy to accumulate the right number of "norms" to advance to the next level. Teachers listed below have indicated a specialty/interest in this area.

Blitz

Blitz chess (played at 10 minutes a game or even faster) has its own challenges and rewards. Aggressive play may be more important than perfect accuracy, and managing the clock is essential. Blitz events have their own rules, ratings, and tournament schedules. Not all great players are great at blitz, and some of the best blitz players fare much better than that at standard time controls. Teachers listed below have indicated a specialty/interest in ths area.

Simuls

Simuls are simultaneous exhibitions in which the exhibitor plays 4, 6, or more players at once by moving from board to board, making one move at each, and then going to the next. In the beginning, the challengers have much more time per move than the exhibitor, since the challenger's "thinking time" lasts a full circuit. Simuls make very effective press and spectator events, since there is a move being made on one of the boards every few seconds. Not all strong players have the temperment or physical stamina required for simuls. Those listed below may be contacted for terms and conditions.

Chess Camps

Chess Camps are intensive learning experiences, often involving 4 or more hours of study per day. Some camps are weekend events; others are a week or two in the summers. The curriculum is quite different from private lessons, since students are generally taught in intensive study groups. Teachers listed below have experience/interest in this type of teaching. Some of these are already associated with existing camps; others are available as adjunct teachers.

Lectures

Lectures often accompany simuls or chess tournaments, and normally last one to two hours. Favorite topics may include the games of a great players, or an intensive look at a particular opening or type of play. Teachers listed below have experience/interest in this type of presentation. Contact them for terms and conditions.

Press Analysis

Players listed below are available for press analysis of important chess events. Contact them for terms and conditions. Many of these players are multilingual.

Problem Composition

Problem composition in chess is an art all its own. The international chess organization, FIDE, grants separate titles for skill in this area, and special competitions are held in most countries. Teachers listed below have indicated a specialty in problem composition.
